A house burst into flames after reports that it was struck by lightning.

Six crews were sent to the blaze in Arnold, Nottinghamshire around 3.00am on July 24, as intense thunderstorms swept through the region.

It is suspected that a lightning strike caused the fire.

The home owners were not inside the property and confirmed there were no injuries, say Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service.

Pictures from the scene show extensive damage to the roof of the property.

Ben Bennett, 80, said he heard the crack of lightning.

He said: “It was like a bomb going off. And then within seconds we could smell the smoke. Looked out our window and could see the fire. The crews were here so quick, it was absolutely super.”

Another resident added: “You hear about it but you never ever see it. It’s such a shame. I feel for the owners.

“You can’t usually hear lightning but you could hear this hitting the house. It was like a bone snapping.

“Hats off to the fire brigade, they were here so quickly and they were brilliant.”
