Homeless man with broken leg left 'distressed' after security guard throws his sleeping bag and crutches in the bin

A homeless man with a broken leg was left 'blue with cold' after a security guard allegedly threw his sleeping bag and crutches in a bin.

The man was found "shivering and distressed" the next morning by staff in a nearby restaurant in Birmingham city centre.

An investigation into the incident has now been launched.

It is said to have happened outside the Islington Gates apartment block on Fleet Street last Friday morning (April 5).

Savills, which runs the development, said an investigation had been launched by a "third party security contractor" into the "alleged misconduct".

A Savills spokesman said: "As managing agent of the Islington Gates development, Savills can confirm an incident took place on Thursday, April 4 concerning the treatment of an individual on site.

"We take these kind of accusations very seriously and we are currently in talks with the third party security contractor who has launched a full investigation into the alleged misconduct."

Itihaas owner, Rajeev Rana, said his chefs found the man, known as Bob, looking "like a zombie" after a night exposed to the elements.

On Friday morning, my staff checked on the homeless man to find him shivering and distressed; his lips were blue from the cold and his skin was a ghostly, pale white. His sleeping bag, leg brace and crutches were all missing, along with his bag of clothes. We quickly gave him a shot of brandy to warm him up along with more hot curry and rice. He told my staff a guard who patrols the residential block overnight had aggressively tried to move him on. When he pleaded to be allowed to stay for the night, the guard stripped him of his sleeping bag, gathered up his brace, crutches and belongings and threw them in the residential bins and promptly locked the bin store, so the homeless man could not retrieve the items. Bob was unable to walk to another spot without the aid of his brace and crutches and had to remain in the same place, without a sleeping bag, until my staff found him the next day. It's truly disgusting what happened. The guy, who was aged mid-20s, couldn't even crawl, let alone walk. He looked like a zombie.
