How can I help someone who is homeless?
A homeless man has been found dead near Birmingham's Bullring shopping centre.
The 31-year-old, named locally as Kane Walker, was found at 3:30pm on Sunday.
Here is some advice we've asked the charity Shelter to provide on what you can do if you want to help someone in the cold weather.
Shelter say that many people want to be able to provide immediate help to someone they see on the streets. An offer of a hot drink, a sandwich, or a blanket and warm clothing could help you find out what other type of support the person may need.
They suggest that if you are concerned about someone you could get in touch with a service like StreetLink who will contact a local outreach service that can go directly to the person. You will need to provide a description and the location of the person to make finding them easier.
Call 999 if the person sleeping rough needs urgent medical help.
There is plenty of advice online for homeless people and free phone numbers they can call.
Day centres provide food, showers and warmth during the day. You can find information online about what practical help is available.
The local council may be able to help someone who is homeless with emergency accommodation.
The council might also provide emergency help if the temperature drops below zero.
Find information on local homelessness services and accommodation on the Homeless Link website, using the homelessness services directory.
The cold winter weather is a particular threat for rough sleepers. Homeless Link publish lists of winter shelters that could provide a safe place to stay for the night.
