More than 1,000 people attended a charity rugby match yesterday in honour of a Shropshire couple who died just days before Christmas.

Jason Francis was hit by a car in Perth, Australia, on December 22nd. His partner, Alice Robinson, was found dead less than 24 hours later.

Around 100 people took part in the tournament at Bridgnorth Rugby Club, which was watched by 1,200 supporters.

More than £16,000 has been raised for the couple's families so far. The club says the money is to 'help in any way it can'.

In a tribute posted on the club's Facebook page, Ian George said Jason was 'a nice a lad as you would ever like to meet'.

He added: "He never had a bad word to say about anyone. Always had a big smile on his face. He’d walk into the room and lift the atmosphere.

"I’ve known him for years. He grew up with my children. It’s just so sad.”
