Backpacker who broke her neck diving in Thailand comes home for Christmas
A British backpacker who broke her neck diving in Thailand will begin her journey home today (25 December).
Sophie Wilson, 24, from Shepshed, Leicestershire was rushed to hospital on December 1st after having dived into the shallow end of her hotel pool.
She had been just one week into a six-month backpacking tour of Asia when the incident happened.
It is still not clear if she will be able to walk again.
Today she will be board a plane with three Thai medics to make the 13-hour flight Heathrow.
From Heathrow she will be taken to Queens Medical Centre in Nottingham for further treatment.
Sophie's medical treatment has not been covered by her insurance company leaving her family to cover medical and travel costs to get her home safely.
Since the accident Sophie has had around 10 hours of surgery in Chiang Mai and has undergone physiotherapy to ensure that she is fit enough to fly.
So far, over £66,000 has been raised on the family’s GoFundMe page.
