A rare police helmet which dates back to the early 1900s has been found.

The helmet was acquired by a member of the public who handed it back to West Midlands Police along with two badges.

It's thought the hat dates back to the early 1900s because of its spike. It's believed to have belonged to a PC Ernest Tipler who retired from the force in the 1940s.

Two badges were also handed in, with one Wolverhampton Borough Police badge dating back to the Victorian era.

The second badge - from Wolverhampton Special Constabulary - is thought to be more than 60 years old.

Inspector Steve Rice, who specialises in heritage at West Midlands Police, said: "We are extremely grateful to receive this historic helmet which will feature greatly within our collection.

"It reflects back to a period of policing many, many decades ago and it is always intriguing to see how times and equipment changes. We don’t believe there are many of these still in existence and both the helmet and badges will help to further showcase our heritage."

The artefacts will be used as part of the fascinating collection of items and artefacts at the Police Museum in Sparkhill.
