British tourist describes terror of Portugal wildfires

A woman, who has just returned from Portugal where hundreds of firefighters are battling wildfires, has described the scene around her resort as "apocalyptic".

Victoria Lee from Leicestershire, who is still suffering the effects of the smoke, says the intensity of the fire along with ash rain was terrifying.

She was staying in Ferragudo, near to where forest fires are raging in the Algarve region.

While she was out for dinner, strong winds began to gust towards the resort, carrying smoke, ash and heat.

Victoria says she is glad to be back in the UK but is concerned for her friend, who is still in Portugal for another week with her young son.

Hundreds of firefighters have been battling the blaze.

It is hoped a drop in temperature over the next few days will help to bring it under control.
