Man arrested after 16 hour armed stand-off with police

A 30-year-old man has been arrested after a 16 hour stand off with armed police in Leicester.

Officers were called in after reports a man had barricaded himself inside a house in Sonning Way, Eyres Monsell, and was preventing anyone else from entering.

Staff from Western Power and Leicester City Council wanted to get inside to make sure the property was safe, follows concerns that live electricity wires were exposed inside.

Around 60 nearby homes had their electricity turned off. A crisis centre was set up for those without power.

Armed police were outside the property overnight. A came outside at around 3am and was arrested on suspicion of affray and criminal damage.

Police said a teenager, who was inside the home, was now in a place of safety. No-was injured during the incident.

The electricity supply was switched back on just after 4am.
