The number of adults in Leicestershire with diabetes has now passed 67,000 - that is nearly nine per cent of the entire county.

Diabetes UK estimate that 90 per cent of those patients are Type 2 diabetics - in which the condition is affected by diet and lifestyle.

The South Asian community is disproportionately affected. The ethnic group makes up just 4% of the UK population, but accounts for an estimated 8% of all diagnosed cases.

Because of its multi ethnic makeup, Leicester recently became the first city in the UK to join a global diabetes awareness programme, alongside places like Los Angeles, Rome and Copenhagen.

People with diabetes have impaired blood supply and are more prone to infections. And increasingly, that's leading to more and more amputations.

A doctor from Leicestershire has told ITV News Central that he estimates there are as many as 2 amputations every week on patients with diabetes in the county.
