The code to keeping your marriage proposal a secret at the airport

Ahead of Valentine's Day, East Midlands Airport has come up with a 'secret code' to help travellers who have plans to propose.

It will help avoid the awkward situation of engagement rings being removed from hand luggage during bag searches in the presence of a wife or husband to be.

Anyone taking an engagement ring with them through security at the airport can now contact them in advance of their travels to obtain a ‘secret code’.

When this is mentioned to security staff on arrival, the passenger carrying the ring will be directed to a separate security lane, away from the glare of travelling companions.

Matthew Quinney, East Midlands Airport’s Head of Security, said:
