Doctor convicted of causing boy's death struck off

The High Court has ruled that a doctor who was found guilty of gross negligence manslaughter over the death of a six-year-old boy should be struck off.

Jack Adcock, from Glen Parva who had Down's Syndrome and a known heart condition, died at Leicester Royal Infirmary in 2011 after he developed sepsis.

After a 2015 trial at Nottingham Crown Court, Dr Hadiza Bawa-Garba was sentenced to two years in prison suspended for two years for his death. However, her defence at a Medical Practitioners Tribunal said there were 'systemic failings' at the hospital which should be taken into account - and that she should be suspended, rather than barred.

In response to today's ruling, the General Medical Council said the court's decision confirmed that the Tribunal was wrong.
