School For Stammerers: Man goes on intensive speech therapy course to regain his self confidence
A man from Stoke-on-Trent, who developed a stammer as a child, has allowed cameras to follow him as he went on an intensive course to try and control his stutter.
Mueid Kaleem was one of five people whose stories featured on the ITV documentary School For Stammerers.
He believes his stammer started because he was brought up in a strict household, and was afraid of speaking up.
Mueid put himself through an intensive course known as the McGuire Programme, run by a team who all have stammers.
Over four days, he underwent 52 hours of speech therapy - with no contact with loved ones.
He was taught to change the way he breathed and spoke.
He also completed a series of tasks, such as speaking on the phone, talking to strangers and speaking in public.
Mueid is one of the half a million people in the UK who have a stammer.
That amounts to one out of every 100 people in the population.
For many of those people, having a stammer can affect every aspect of their lives.
The McGuire Programme is not seen as a cure, but as a way for people control their stammer and give themselves back a voice.
Mueid said completing the course was only a start of his journey to achieving his goals and helping other people in the future.
