Mark Hughes sacked as Stoke manager
Mark Hughes has been sacked as Stoke City manager, just moments after the Premier League club's shock FA Cup defeat at the hands of Midlands rivals Coventry City.
Hughes was appointed manager in 2013 and has taken charge of the Potters for exactly 200 games.
Hughes had been under pressure after a run of five defeats in seven games left Stoke in the Premier League relegation zone at the start of 2018. But the final straw for the board was defeat at the hands of League Two Coventry City this afternoon.
Jordan Willis gave Coventry a half time lead. But the home side's goal-scoring hero conceded a penalty in the second half when he fouled Ramadan Sobhi. Charlie Adam scored from the spot to draw Stoke level.
But Jack Grimmer put Coventry back in front after 68 minutes, and the League Two side clung on, to claim a place in the fourth round.
In a statement on Saturday evening, the club wished Mark Hughes well, and said it would appoint a new manager as soon as possible.
Among the possible contenders are former Everton manager Ronald Koeman, current Fulham boss Slavisa Jokanovic, and Ryan Giggs who is known to be looking for a move into management with a Premier League club.
