A car has crashed into a bridge before landing in a river in the early hours of this morning, according to police.

The car collided into a bridge on Makeney Road in Duffield, before it landed in the River Derwent.

Makeney Road is currently closed in both directions with diversions in place.

Police say structural damage has been caused to the bridge following the crash and highways officers will look into this further.

The driver escaped with minor injuries.
