Thousands of people have taken to the streets of Birmingham earlier today to take part in the first Birmingham International Marathon.

It's been more than three decades since a marathon was held in the city, and including the half marathon, 22,000 are estimated to have taken part.

Winner of the women's marathon was 23-year-old Sophie Kelly who was surprised with her success.

The event also saw a unique record being broken - with Alistair Rutherford smashing the world record for running a marathon dressed as a musical instrument.

The student who wore a viola completed the course in just over 3 hours and 20 minutes.

He studies in Birmingham and wanted to break the record to raise money for a charity which provides music lessons to children in Johannesburg.
