15-year-old tells how dad lost leg in explosion
A 15-year-old boy has described his family's horror after learning his father was seriously injured in an explosion in Colwick, Nottingham.
Robert Tyrko lost his leg in the incident just before 10am yesterday (20 September). Originally from Poland, he had been living in the UK for 11 years, and had worked at the firm for eight years.
The 48-year-old is one of two men injured in the explosion.
His son, Sv Krystian said members of the family had been to see him in the Queen’s Medical Centre, but he couldn’t bring himself to see his Dad in that condition.
The St Ann’s resident said:
The Health and Safety Executive is now investigating the incident, which happened at Bio Dynamic, in Colwick Industrial Estate.
It is understood that a large upright blue cylinder exploded at the firm, which specialises in anaerobic digestion, turning food waste into energy.
A large cordon was set up by police well into the evening, and it was discovered shortly after the explosion that there had been a slurry leak which had to be cleared up.
A spokesman for Bio Dynamic said they are working with the Health and Safety Executive to investigate the incident.
He said in a statement yesterday:
