16-year-old sentenced after supermarket explosion
A teenager has been given more than four years' custody after causing an explosion at a supermarket.
The 16-year-old, who cannot be named, made an explosive device and set it off in the male toilets of Sainsbury's in Blackheath, Sandwell.
The store had to be evacuated following the incident on May 27 and the boy was caught nearby with two knives after fleeing the scene.
He pleaded guilty to making an explosive substance for an unlawful purpose, causing an explosion with intent to endanger life and possession of a knife in a public place.
He was sentenced to four years and four months in a youth detention centre.
No one was injured in the blast.
