Bus driver charged with causing death by dangerous driving in fatal Sainsbury's crash

A driver who was at the wheel of a double decker bus which crashed into a supermarket in Coventry, killing two, has been charged with causing death by dangerous driving.

Seven-year-old Rowan Fitzgerald and Dora Hancox, 76, were killed when the bus they were travelling on smashed into Sainsbury's storefront in October 2015.

The Crown Prosecution Service said driver Kailash Chandler, 79, has been charged with two counts of causing death by dangerous driving and two counts of causing serious injury by dangerous driving.

In a statement confirming the charges, the Crown Prosecution Service said: “The CPS has authorised West Midlands Police to bring charges in relation to a fatal collision involving a bus in Coventry on 3 October 2015.

“Bus driver Kailash Chander, 79, has been charged with two counts of causing death by dangerous driving and two counts of causing serious injury by dangerous driving."

Mr Chandler's employer Midland Red (South) Limited has also been charged with two offences under the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974.

Mr Chandler and his employer will appear at Coventry Magistrates’ Court on September 7 to answer the charges.
