Tributes have been paid to Spencer Hurst, who drowned in a lake with friends on the hottest day of the year.

The 15-year-old has been described as a talented young boxer and flowers have been laid by the lake in Pelsall.

It is understood he was a member of Pleck Amateur Boxing Club, and went on to become West Midlands Schoolboy Champion.

A tweet by retired professional boxer Martin Gethin read:

Spencer and his friends had been cooling off in Ryders Hayes Mear, Pelsall, as the temperature soared above 30°C on Tuesday evening.

A spokesman for West Midlands Ambulance Service confirmed Spencer went into the water and failed to resurface.

He was pulled from the water around an hour later and declared dead at the scene.

David Mountney, headteacher at Aldridge School, confirmed the youngster had been a Year 10 pupil.

Counselling services will be provided for pupils affected by the tragedy.
