Police are appealing for information after receiving a report concerning the safety of a person and their dog.

Officers received the call just after 10.30 this morning (Sunday 11 June) after a member of the public spotted what they described as an abandoned dog on an island by the River Wye, opposite Wilton Hall, Ross-on-Wye in Herefordshire.

Police say that the dog's behaviour indicated that its owner had possibly entered the river and a short time later, the dog also entered the river.

Police searches are ongoing to trace both the owner and the dog. West Midlands Fire & Rescue and the National Police Air Service are also assisting with the search.

The dog is described as a yellow Labrador Retriever and Airedale Terrier cross. It was wearing a red collar with a silver disc.
