Elderly duo chase suspect after mugging

Police are appealing for witnesses after an elderly victim of a robbery and an elderly passerby chased after the suspect in Cheltenham.

It happened in Carlton Street at about 4pm on Monday 27 February.

The 82-year-old victim had been shopping at a convenience store in Albion Street and while walking back to his car in Carlton Street, was forcibly pushed from behind by a man who reached into his pocket and took his wallet.

The victim, who managed to stay on his feet, pursued the offender who fled down a nearby alleyway and straight into the path of a 72-year-old passerby.

The 72-year-old then tried to stop the mugger but, after being pushed aside, took up the chase himself and followed the suspect into Priory Walk, back into Carlton Street, and then onto Hewlett Road where he lost sight of the offender.

Neither the victim nor witness were injured, but the wallet which contained more than £100 in cash has not been recovered.

A 43-year-old local man was later arrested on suspicion of robbery, interviewed and bailed while enquiries continue.
