Man dies in severe building fire in Birmingham

A man has died in a severe fire in Smethwick in Birmingham, according to emergency services.

West Midlands Fire and Rescue Service and the Ambulance Service were called to City Road at around 4.40am this morning.

Several fire crews are still at the scene and the service tweeted that their "thoughts and sympathies are with his family".

The A4040 is currently closed in both directions and traffic is slow between the B4125 Portland Road and Ravenshaw Road.
