Risk to public health is low following major fire

Risk to public health is low following a major fire which broke out in Stoke-on-Trent over the weekend.

The blaze broke out at a recycling plant in Milton with more than 50 firefighters involved at its height.

Stoke-on-Trent City Council say people in areas affected by the smoke should stay indoors and keep doors/windows closed.

They should also continue to check online and local radio for further information and advice.

  • Motorists who have to travel through the smoke should keep windows closed, turn off air conditioning and keep air vents closed

  • Any smoke can be an irritant - if people need to be outdoors in areas affected by the smoke they should avoid or limit time spent in areas affected by smoke or ash

  • Chemicals in smoke can worsen health problems like asthma and heart conditions so people should carry their medication if they are in areas affected by the smoke

  • Smoke can irritate airways, skin, eyes and cause coughing/wheezing breathlessness chest pain

  • Get medical advice if affected by the smoke
