Hillsborough: CPS to consider 23 criminal charges

Files on 23 people and organisations involved in the 1989 Hillsborough disaster have been passed to the Crown Prosecution Service.

The charges have been recommended as a result of two separate criminal investigations by the Independent Police Complaints Commission and Operation Resolve, which was set up in 2012 by then-Home Secretary Theresa May.

Six people from the Midlands died in the disaster Paul Murray from Stoke-on-Trent, David Birtle was born in West Bromwich and Andrew Brookes from Bromsgrove.

As well as Paul Clark from Derbyshire, Nicholas Hewitt from Leicester and Carl Hewitt from Leicester.

Of the 23 files passed to the CPS, 15 suspects relate to Operation Resolve’s investigation into the causes of the disaster.

A further eight individuals relate to the IPCC’s independent investigation into both South Yorkshire Police and West Midlands Police and the alleged cover-up of the disaster.
