Wards closed at Ross on Wye Hospital after Norovirus outbreak
Both wards at Ross on Wye Community Hospital have been closed to visitors because of an outbreak of Norovirus.
The trust which runs the hospital says there are cases of diarrhoea and vomiting caused by the bug on Merlin ward and Peregrin ward.
They say by restricting access for visitors, the chance of the virus spreading to other areas of the hospital and the community in general is lessened.
It comes as Public Health England data shows more patients have been struck down with the bug this winter compared with the previous five years, nationwide.
In total so far this season, there have been 163 hospital outbreaks reported.
Wye Valley NHS Trust has given some guidance as to how the public can stop Norovirus spreading:
Wash your hands frequently and thoroughly with soap and warm water, particularly after using the toilet, and before preparing food. If you’re in an NHS facility pay attention to hand hygiene notices such as using hand gel upon entering and leaving a ward.
Disinfect any surfaces or objects that could be contaminated with a norovirus. It is best to use a bleach-based household cleaner. Always follow the instructions on the cleaning product.
Flush away any infected faeces or vomit in the toilet. You should also keep the surrounding toilet area clean and hygienic.
Wash any clothing, or linens, which could have become contaminated with a norovirus. Washing with hot, soapy water will help to ensure that the virus is killed.
If you do have norovirus, stay away from work, school, college or social gatherings until you have been free of symptoms for at least 48 hours.
