Concrete barriers have been installed at Birmingham's German Christmas Markets in a bid to strengthen security.

The bollards that have been put up in Colmore Row and Bennetts Hill form part of a wider plan to safeguard the thousands who visit every day.

Police say the move is not the result of any new or specific intelligence and they are working around the clock to keep the city as safe as possible.

West Midlands Police Superintendent Andy Parsons said:

It's thought more than five million people will pass through the event before it closes on 29 December.
