Council to discuss legal action over Shropshire A & E proposals

Proposals suggest only having one A & E department in Shropshire Credit: ITV

Telford and Wrekin Council will meet later today to discuss taking legal action against plans to close the Princess Royal's A and E Department.

Last week a panel of experts proposed having just one Emergency Unit for Shropshire, based at the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital. Under the plans, there would still be an urgent care centre at the Princess Royal Telford NHS Trust.

The meeting will take place at 6pm at Telford College of Arts & Technology and will call on Council members to endorse the launch of a judicial review, if necessary.

There were demonstrations at the weekend in Telford as campaigners turned out in force to show their support for the town's A & E department.

The NHS Future Fit Programme Board recommended having just one A&E department for Shropshire, but the following three options are being considered:

  • No change

  • Emergency and Trauma at Royal Shrewsbury and Planned Care at Princess Royal
