Double yellow lines fail: Workers paint around parked cars
Road workers appear to have painted lines in between parked cars in an area of Coventry.
Some are no longer than one metre in length, while others have only been half complete on Duggins Lane and Conway Avenue, in Tile Hill.
There are also splodges and bobbles in certain areas.
One line, which runs around a corner, appears to have stopped early perfectly in line with the rear wheel of a parked vehicle.
The patchy lines are understood to have been painted on Monday and appear to have little effect on drivers today with several simply parking in the gaps or on top of them.
New parking restrictions are being rolled out around the nearby Tile Hill Railway Station in a bid to combat problems with commuters leaving their cars in residential streets. They include an increase in double yellow lines and the introduction of a residents’ parking scheme.
Coventry council bosses insist it’s “common” practice to leave unfinished yellow lines if cars are in the way.
A spokesman said:“Although it might look a bit odd, it’s common for work to be completed in this way when there are obstructions.
“In fact, if we waited to get yellow lines done in one hit – we’d never be able to start a job.
“We always assess sites carefully and try to avoid costly road closures where we can. It is normal to leave some gaps where there are obstructions, but we only do this when the vast majority of the work can be completed.
“The costs of returning for a second visit are less than the cost of a full road closure in many cases, so this is the most cost effective practice.”
