Colwich rail crash remembered thirty years on
Thirty years ago two trains collided on a stretch of track in Staffordshire leaving a horrific wreck of carriages and one train driver dead.
A further 75 people were injured and now all that remains is a garden dedicated to the event near the site of the 1986 crash at Colwich.
Train driver Eric Goode was driving the 12-carriage vehicle from Liverpool to Euston, when it hit a stationary train which had crossed a red signal.
The driver of the other train, travelling from London to Manchester, along with a trainee driver, managed to jump clear before the impact.
Eight coaches of the Liverpool train and three of the Manchester one were derailed, with some of the carriages left hanging from a bridge.
Initial reports said two people had died but it later turned out that Mr Goode was the only fatality.
