Top tips to reduce food waste and get the most from your freezer

Households are wasting seven million tonnes of food each year in the UK. Of this, 4.2 million tonnes are completely avoidable - that would fill five Wembley Stadiums.

Here are some top tips and suggestions for saving money on your weekly shop by making the most of your freezer. But experts advise you don't freeze things for longer than three months.

Potatoes

Everyday we throw away more than five million potatoes in the UK.Par boil left over potatoes and freeze, they can be roasted at a later date.

Bananas

When bananas are beginning to go brown, peel and pop in the freezer in a bag or plastic container. Although they can look at bit odd, put them in a blender to add to a smoothie.

Cheese

Most cheeses can be frozen once grated, with the exception of soft cheeses. Stilton should be crumbled and stored in a sealed container – its texture can even improve once frozen.

Red Wine

Leftover wine can be frozen in an ice cube tray and used to add depth to meals.

Leftover cooked meat

Chicken and lamb can be frozen. Thaw in the fridge and use as normal, in a risotto or curry.

Fruit

Slice and freeze lemons then use them straight from the fridge in iced drinks. Frozen grapes and strawberries also work.
