The newest face on Birmingham's music scene is making something of a stir - and with good reason.

At just 30 years old, Mirga Gražinytė-Tyla has been appointed as the Music Director at the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra.

She's the only woman to hold the position at a major UK orchestra - and has already worked with top orchestras in Los Angeles and Salzburg.

  • Mirga on what attracted her to the role

After making two guest appearances with the orchestra at the Symphony Hall, she was announced as the CBSO's new chief conductor in February.

She'll be making her debut as the orchestra's director at the Symphony Hall tomorrow, going on to perform at the prestigious Royal Albert Hall as part of the Proms on Saturday.

  • Mirga on the experience of conducting at the Symphony Hall

Brought up in Lithuania by her musician parents, Mirga never actually studied an instrument but made her mind up early on that she wanted to pursue a career in music.

Despite the position of conductor being seen as a traditionally male-dominated role, she's never let that put her off - and thinks it's important to provide a role model for girls interested in music.
