MP causes stir with 'British Empire' Olympics tweet

South Derbyshire MP Heather Wheeler causes a stir after posting an image claiming the 'British Empire' won 396 medals at the Olympic Games in Rio.

The Conservative MP, who assumed office in the 2010 elections, posted the tweet on Monday after the closing ceremony of the games.

Mrs Wheeler was also an outspoken supporter of Brexit in the lead up to the EU referendum.

It is safe to say she has faced a backlash from several twitter users, who claim her post was 'insensitive' to refer to the collective nations which constitute as the Commonwealth as the 'British Empire'
