Birmingham's Eid Mela returns to Cannon Hill Park

Birmingham's Eid Mela will take place in Cannon Hill park today.

It is a celebration of the city's South Asian community through its culture, food, sport, art and entertainment. The event is now in its 16th year.

Big John’s Birmingham Mela will be headlined by singer Imran Khan. Other performers at the event include Bonafide, Asif Khan, Juggy D, Zack Knight, Rameet and B21. Community acts such as Yemani Music Group, New Creativity and RnR Dancers also taking part.

Attractions include funfair rides, a sports area hosting a Kabbadi tournament, a fashion show, a martial arts display, a bazaar with clothing, jewellery, music and craft stalls, and lots of traditional Asian food.

This year the event, which is funded through corporate sponsorship and sales of stalls, also received a grant from Arts Council England.

The Mela runs from 12pm to 8pm with free parking available at Edgbaston Stadium, home of Warwickshire County Cricket Ground, and Calthorpe Park, off Pershore Road. However the city council are encouraging visitors to use public transport where possible.
