Consultation begins on Leicester's Golden Mile revamp
A consultation begins today (28 June) on how Leicester's Golden Mile could look if a proposed revamp is given the go-ahead.
The City Council has been working with external experts to improve Belgrave Road for traffic, local businesses, residents and visitors.
Detailed designs have been drawn up for two possible schemes.
One would see the number of traffic lanes halved from four to two.
Space would be given over to wider pavements, with a flush central reserve at bus stops and loading bays to allow traffic to pass parked vehicles.
The second design keeps all four traffic lanes.
In both designs, the road layout is simplified. The plans look at including fewer traffic signals while retaining safe places for pedestrians to cross.
Leicester City Council also said pavements would be revamped with high-quality materials in both designs.
Part of the proposal also includes plans to create a new public space at the southern end of Belgrave Road by re-routing Donaldson Road and opening up the area close the city's Gandhi statue.
City Mayor Peter Soulsby said:
A five-week public consultation on the latest design ideas begins today and runs until August 4.
There will be two public drop-in sessions running at Belgrave Neighbourhood Centre. These will take place between 4-8pm today, and on June 30, between 2-7pm.
The designs will also be on display at Belgrave Library throughout July.
