It was widely predicted that Labour would take a hit in the local elections - despite the tradition that it is the party in power nationally which suffers locally.

Labour is currently embroiled in an anti-semitism row and Jeremy Corbyn's leadership style has frustrated many supporters.

They did lose control of Dudley in the West Midlands to No Overall Control, after they lost three seats. The Conservatives gained four seats and UKIP one. There are now eight UKIP councillors in the town.

But, they held onto Birmingham, where they gained two seats, taking Weoley early from the Conservatives. They are also in power still in bellwether Nuneaton, and more narrowly in Derby and Cannock.

In Walsall, although there is still No Overall Control, Labour say they will try for a coalition with the Liberal Democrats - previously it was a Conservative leadership backed by the Independents.

The Conservatives lost overall control of Worcester - which was the first council to change hands overnight - although they are still the largest party.

But they won Peterborough outright and retain Solihull and Tamworth.
