Derbyshire had the lowest Police & Crime Commissioner Election turnout in the East Midlands in November 2012.

On average just 14.3% of those eligible to vote across the county bothered with the ballot box, and in Bolsover that was down to just 12.56% of the electorate.

So can 2016’s candidates get people in Derbyshire fired up about having their democratic say in how the police should be run?

Here you can listen to each of them stake their claim as to why they should be elected into the PCC job.

Richard Bright - Conservative PCC Candidate

Richard Bright lives in Ashbourne with his family and says he’s committed to tackling rural crime and reversing the closure of police stations across the county.

His campaign also includes tackling delays in reporting crime and the length of time it takes to get through to police on the non-emergency 101 telephone number.

Hardyal Dhindsa - Labour PCC Candidate

Hardyal Dhindsa has spent the last three and a half years as Deputy PCC underneath incumbent PCC Alan Charles.

If elected to the top position he says he’ll make sure visible bobbies on the beat are kept, fight any future cuts to the force budget, and stop plans for any privatisation within the Derbyshire force.

Tom Snowdon - Liberal Democrat PCC Candidate

Tom Snowdon has spent the last 30 years working in the industrial manufacturing industry and says his experience achieving cost efficiencies in large businesses will lend themselves to tackling an ever shrinking police force budget.

His campaign includes the decriminalisation and regulation of cannabis to free up officers to fight other types of crime, and also the abolition of the entire Police & Crime Commissioner role, in favour of a return to a similar committee based governance that Police Authorities used to provide.

Stuart Yeowart - UKIP PCC Candidate

Stuart Yeowart was previously a serving police officer in the Derbyshire force, working as a police traffic officer for 18 years and also as part of the Bolsover community policing team. He currently works as a driving instructor.

His campaign includes fighting budget cuts to the police force budget and pledging to hold meetings right across the county to engage with as many people as possible if he’s elected into office.
