Mother 'wept constantly' as she is jailed for life for murder of toddler daughter
A mother has wept constantly as she was jailed for life for murdering her toddler daughter Ayeeshia Jane Smith by stamping the child to death.
23-year-old Kathryn Smith was convicted by majority verdict at Birmingham Crown Court on Friday after a six-week trial of her and ex-partner Matthew Rigby.
Kathryn Smith will serve a minimum term of 24 years behind bars. She was also found guilty of cruelty to the child. That four year sentence will run concurrently.
Rigby was convicted of causing or allowing Ayeeshia's death on May 1, 2014, but cleared of her murder.
He was sentenced today to three and a half years in prison for causing or allowing the death of Ayeeshia Jane Smith.
