104-year-old is one of the oldest patients in the country to have a hip replacement

Edith Varley had the surgery in December

At 104, Edith Varley has become one of the oldest patients in the country to have a hip replacement.

The retired clerk, from Oadby in Leicestershire, first had her hip replaced in 1987. However it recently came loose, leaving her in severe pain.

Despite turning 104 a couple of weeks before her operation, she has been living independently and has been in good health.

The operation took place at Leicester General Hospital on 22 December and was led by Consultant orthopaedic surgeon Richard Power.

Doctors say that Mrs Varley is making a good recovery and should be able to continue living independently.
