Families across the Midlands are being asked to spend an hour this weekend watching out for birds in their garden as part of the RSPB's Big Garden Birdwatch.

It's been taking place for almost forty years and is a way for the charity to see how bird populations in the region are faring.

Julie Foreman from the RSPB told ITV News Central that the participation of schools in the scheme is very important for raising interest in the welfare of birds.

Renowned wildlife expert Sir David Attenborough has stressed how important it is that people take an interest in the natural world, even when it's very close to home.

Sir David, who was brought up in Leicester, says it is crucial for humanity's survival that we think about the natural world around us.
