Actor Robert Lindsay granted Freedom of the Borough for services to theatre and film

The actor Robert Lindsay has been honoured by his local council for "never forgetting his roots" in spite of international fame.

The film and television star from Ilkeston in Derbyshire made his name in hit TV shows like "My Family" and Citizen Smith"

Last night Erewash Borough Council voted to grant him Freedom of the Borough in recognition of his "outstanding contribution to the British international theatre and film scene.

The star serves as the president of his home town football club, Ilkeston Town FC.

Last year in an interview with the Independent, Mr Lindsay said he would be reprising the role of 'Wolfie' Smith, the star of the 1970s sitcom "Citizen Smith."
