Nottinghamshire takeaways in health push as 67% of county overweight
Takeaways in Nottinghamshire are being given tips on how to become healthier as the county looks to reduce the number of people who are obese or overweight.
More than two thirds of people in the county are overweight or obese.
Healthier Options
The scheme, which is called the 'Healthier Options Takeaway (HOT)' merit scheme is being launched today at the Food Bari n Beeston.
It recognises takeaways and sandwich shops that make adjustments to the way they prepare, cook and display food to improve how healthy it is.
Tips being offered to business include:
Offering to grill, bake, poach or steam food instead of frying
Removing salt from tables and counters so customers don't just add it automatically
Switching to wholegrain pasta, brown rice or wholegrain bread
Offering a vegetable side or salad as a part of a meal option
Switching from double cream to single cream, yoghurt or half fat crème fraiche
Promoting water or low sugar drinks
Offering smaller portion options for adults.
Obesity in Nottinghamshire
More than two thirds of adults in Nottinghamshire are classed as obese or overweight - that's three percent higher than the national average of 64.3%.
