Manifesto launched as 91% of 2-4 year olds not active enough

Experts say more must be done to help under fives stay healthy, as research shows that more than 90% of two to four year olds are not active enough.

Specialists from Loughborough University have launched a manifesto to encourage politicians to include the early years of childhood in physical activity guidelines.

Researchers have launched their manifesto today, setting out the priorities for ensuring a children get the opportunity to be physically active from birth.

Their four main priorities are:

  • 1. Awareness - Making sure health and education professionals and families are aware of physical activity guidelines.

  • 2. Education - More emphasis on the importance of physical activity in a child's early life.

  • 3. Environment - Giving all children access to stimulating and accessible physical activity and active travel opportunities.

  • 4. Health - Health professionals should track the physical activity levels of children in the early years and share those results with parents.

The manifesto has been launched by early years specialists from the British Heart Foundation National Centre for Physical Activity and Health (BHFNC).They stress that active children are more likely to become active adults and to live healthier lives.
