The current Sheriff of Nottingham has paid tribute to actor Alan Rickman who took on the role in the 1991 blockbuster Robin Hood: Prince Of Thieves.

Rickman has died aged 69 following a career which saw him star as Hans Gruber in Die Hard, Professor Severus Snape in the Harry Potter films and Harry in Love Actually.

He won a Bafta for best actor in a supporting role for his performance as theSheriff of Nottingham alongside Kevin Costner who played the title role in Prince Of Thieves.

Mohammed Saghir, who has the ceremonial role as the Sheriff of Nottingham at Nottingham City Council, said:

"In Nottingham, we'll always remember Alan Rickman in his role as the sheriff and are so sad to hear of his death.

"There are many actors who have played the role of Sheriff of Nottingham, but few have done so as memorably as Alan Rickman in Robin Hood: Prince Of Thieves.

"His sheriff was a gloriously nasty character who it was easy to love to hateand who he appeared to have great fun playing."
