Nottingham City Council facing cuts of over £20m
Nottingham City Council has said that it needs to save more than £20 million in the next financial year because of Government cuts.
Proposed cuts include a rise in council tax by almost 2% to pay for social care, as announced by the Chancellor in his autumn statement.
The expected cuts will see the loss of 55 jobs across the council, but the council has said that it will be pursuing commercial opportunities in a bid to minimise the impact of cuts on ‘vulnerable citizens.’
Proposals to the 2016/17 budget include:
Increasing day care fees and charges from £12 - £15 a day in line with national guidelines
Making annual savings of £123,000 in street lighting, which includes extending dimming onto residential streets
Introducing a £3 fee for non-city residents using Park and Ride sites
Saving £178,000 through a review of fees and charges in sport and culture
Increasing income by commercialising services like waste and skip hire
Nottingham City Council’s Deputy Leader, Councillor Graham Chapman, said:
The proposals will be considered next week before the budget is approved in March.
