Cold Canadian air cools the Midlands

When we talk about air mass in weather terms it is literally a mass of a certain type of air. There are six kinds and what divides them are what we call weather fronts.

The nature of an air mass is determined by several factors including, the source region and the changes that can happen as they move away from their source region across the earth's surface.

Today our air mass is coming from northern Canada. It is a Continental polar airmass which is cold and dry .It often brings the cold, dry and crisp weather on a perfect winter day. In the summer it means dry, warm and pleasant weather.

The cold front of this air mass brought rain today, but once that clears the temperature will plummet. Tonight expect it to be cold and frosty apart form an isolated shower.

Another front tomorrow brings yet more rain, some of it heavy and the Met Office have issued a warning for string winds. You can find out more about that here: Weather Warning

After the rain clears through on Sunday afternoon, the brief cold snap will be over and temperatures will return to double digits in the day time. For now.
