Two friends raced each other “like a scene out of The Fast and The Furious” before one crashed and killed a university student, a court heard.

Witness Lindsey Grant estimated the two cars were travelling at speeds of around 90mph as they overtook a vehicle in which she was a passenger.

One of the cars, a red Mitsubishi Evolution, then ploughed into a bus stop, killing 21-year-old former Edgbaston schoolgirl Rebecca McManus.

Mitsubishi driver Sukvinder Mannan from Halesowen, pleaded guilty to causing death by dangerous driving and causing serious injury by dangerous driving.

A second motorist, Inderjit Singh, 31 from Wolverhampton, has admitted a charge of dangerous driving and accepted he was racing his BMW.

But he has denied further charges of causing death by dangerous driving and serious injury by dangerous driving.

Mrs Grant told Wolverhampton Crown Court how she was a passenger in a Ford Focus driven by her friend Naomi Knott when she saw a black and red car drive past her at speed.

The court heard the crash happened at Birmingham New Road and Hagley Road West in Quinton, on the evening of May 31 last year.

Miss McManus, from Oldbury, was killed and her friend Harriet Barnsley, also 21, was injured.

CCTV of the moment the university student was mowed down and killed was later played in court. The family of Ms McManus left the room as the footage was played to the jury.

Nigel Power, forensic collision investigator at West Midlands Police, said he had examined the footage and following tests claimed the red Mitsubishi Evolution responsible for the collision had been driving at 101mph.
