Labour councillor John Clancy has travelled from the relative obscurity of the back benches to one of the biggest jobs in local government.

He will oversee a budget of around £3 billion per year.

But who is the man set to succeed Sir Albert Bore as the leader of Birmingham City Council?

  • He spent a single term as councillor for Hodge Hill in 2002-2006 and returned to the city council in 2011 representing Quinton ward

  • He spent much of his career as a secondary school teacher and also spent five years as a visiting lecturer at the University of Birmingham business school.

  • Clancy is a keen darts fan and hit headlines for launching a campaign to preserve dart boards in Birmingham pubs.

  • He has been an outspoken critic of outgoing leader Sir Albert Bore, challenging him a previous four times for the party leadership.
