An inmate has scaled the roof of HMP Birmingham and thrown tiles at prison officers causing ‘horrendous damage’
The stand-off at the prison began at 11am today and lasted until 5pm this evening.
One eyewitness at HMP Birmingham said the prison protester had systematically smashed windows and skylights.
He described damage to the library immediately below the drama as “horrendous”.
Twelve vans from the National Tactical Response Group had been called to the prison, formerly Winson Green and run by security firm G4S.
One man watching the drama unfold said:
An employee claimed it is the second such incident in a matter of days.
Last Thursday, a prisoner was said to have clambered netting on C Wing - and stayed there from 10am to 6pm. He was armed with razor blades, it is alleged.
Monday's incident is the latest controversy at the prison, which holds around 1,450 prisoners.
