An ITV News Central survey of teachers in the Midlands has found that more than 80 per cent have considered leaving the profession in the last two years.

With special reports through the week, our Education Correspondent Peter Bearne will look at the challenges schools face in recruiting and keeping staff.

Of those who had thought about quitting, two-thirds blamed excessive workload.

More than two thousand teachers from our region took part in the research which was carried out for us by the teaching union NASUWT.

When asked if they expect to be still teaching in the next five years, we had the following responses:

  • 36 per cent - NO

  • 39.99 per cent - NOT SURE

  • 23.64 per cent - YES
