Motorists were left furious when they discovered they had filled their cars with the wrong fuel following a mistake made by staff at an Asda petrol station in Birmingham.

The supermarket chain has apologised after ‘human error’ led to two tanks at the petrol station in Small Heath being filled with incorrect fuel.

Asda confirmed that diesel and unleaded fuels were accidentally put into the wrong tanks by the supplier.

There were four fuel pumps affected from 10pm on Saturday, 17 October until 1pm on Sunday, 18 October.

The forecourt was closed immediately after the problem was identified.

It is not known how many customers were affected but Asda bosses say they have been in touch with a ‘number of customers’ so far.

The supermarket has said they are in contact with a number of customers already and have advised them to call on the customer services line on 0800 952 0101.
